TSB - In the Shadow of Machines

Like most DJs, my musical tastes have always been, and continue to be, diverse. While my head is usually in the House/Techno world, I wanted to take a minute and recommend one of my favorite groups, Time Slips By. Their ethereal sounds and unique style make for great chill music to relax to, and have the ability to transport you to other places which, to me anyway -- is a sign of true art. They have released their newest album in May this year "In the Shadow of Machines" and I'd like to suggest checking it out.

A triple threat...

So my inbox has been flooded with requests for music, and I finally have had a little breathing room from work to post some stuff.

I've posted three new mixes up on djdrue.com:

Deep House Mix

Spring Monster Mix

Summer Drive Mix

The summer drive mix is a bit of a departure for me...much more progressive and light...think of it as "driving to the beach music"...or whatever.

Enjoy...

I think it’s pretty safe to say that the electro-house explosion has finally gotten out of hand.  Record shops now have electro-house genre sections. While I’m all for putting everything in it’s proper place, I wonder if electro-house will soon be relegated to the same place in the record store as Speed Garage.

It’s interesting to me that the sawtooth synth style that helps to define the ‘electro’ sound is like the new low-pass filter sweep of the early 90’s.  I see it as a reflection of the influences of the indie hipster trend that is nearly as pervasive as hip hop.  Be it LCD Soundsystem, D. Ramirez, or even older artists like Chus and Ceballos, everyone’s getting the grimy on this year.  I had a friend who loved that “dirty” sound, and what she was describing was this electro influence before it had a name.

Anyway, it’s definitely here, but will it last? Trends come and go, but good sound usually remains.

Hot track: ‘Shy Life’ by Craig Hamilton – very solid underground bumper off his “Glass Cheque” EP. Check it out on Yakuza recordings.

Cool Media: Monkey Kick Off - Another amusing distance flash game.
Cool Site: Nerdy Shirts - Another reason you should never have to buy a t-shirt in person again.

I don’t really choose to get on the political soapbox too much, however, in this case I think something needs to be said regarding the Copyright Royalty Board and their latest decision regarding pay rates for internet radio stations.

In a nutshell, they are toadies for the RIAA, who are greedy bastards, and if they have their way, no one will be able to afford to broadcast audio over the web.

To learn more about this and to do something, Visit savenetradio.org.

If you are a web broadcaster, vist webcastersunite.net for additional resources.

Please act! Thanks.

In other news, I’m headed out this evening to downtown LA to partake in a little blue-collar action…The LA kings are playing Chicago in the Staples Center. While I couldn’t be called a hockey fan, per se, I am learning more about the game. I hear the Tix are good, so hopefully there will be blurry cam-phone pics to follow.

Hot Track: “So Far” by Miguel Migs  - The first release from his full-length album, “Those Things” out on his own label, Salted Music. The album tour kicks off in Miami at WMC with Aya and Lisa Shaw.

Cool Media: Neave Strobe - interesting retinal calisthenics.
Cool Site: If you dig straight down, where do you end up? - Finally, an answer to the age-old question.

I Just recently got a pair of the latest Stanton v3 needles… and I have to report that they definitely kick major ass.  I just have had consistently better bass response in the Stanton line over Ortophons.  I moved one of my old Stantons into the office to my ripping station, and once again, even the older Stantons are better than the turntable standards from Shure.

I'm sure everyone has their opinion... so here's mine:The Stanton line of needles has a warmer and stronger bass response and is a better needle than ortophon for house music.

I’m starting a new piece in my blog. The Hot track. We’ll see how it goes.

Hot track: ‘Shredded Groove’ by the Sound Navigators (Jay West Remix). Check it out on Lingo Recordings.

Cool Site: Rhythmism - New York based dance music site, good interviews
Hilarious Media: Make your Own Bollywood Movie - Crack yourself up in under 10 min.
